This blog is the home of Skokie Public Library's staff training program, 10 Things @ SPL. The 10 Things are new and emerging technologies that are shaping the way people access information, communicate, learn and create. Starting October 1 and running through November 30, you'll have time to explore new tools and get hands-on experience using them.

Without further ado, the Things are:

Blogging

RSS and Feed Readers

Instant Messaging

Social Networking

Flickr and Photo Sharing

Social Bookmarking

Podcasting

Wikis

Google Tools - Online Productivity

The Virtual Library Branch

Each Thing is structured around three main themes: Define, Discover, and Do. We'll provide a short definition, give you some resources to explore the tools or technologies further, and ask you to complete an assigned task. Bonus challenges are available if you finish the task early or want to learn more.

Before launching straight into 10 Things @ SPL, follow the links in the upper right corner and read the FAQs and Getting Started. If these resources do not answer your questions, leave a comment on this blog post and the 10 Things Team will respond as quickly as possible.

If you've finished with the 10 Things, you may also start "recloaking" your online identity. This page on cleaning up will outline the steps for removing your various 10 Things accounts.

By participating and completing the 10 Things @ SPL, you will not only be learning new things, but you will also be actively working to fulfill the Mission of Skokie Public Library:

Skokie Public Library promotes lifelong learning, discovery and enrichment through a broad spectrum of materials, technologies, and experiences. Serving a diverse population, the Library facilitates access to information, the exchange of ideas, and the building of community.

And now... let's get started on the 10 Things!

Cleaning Up: Deleting Your Accounts and Leaving No Trace

Now that you've finished with the 10 Things, you are free to do what you wish with the various accounts you've created. We hope that some of you might keep your blogs going, build your collection of bookmarks on del.icio.us, or use your social network pages to stay in touch with your friends.

Some of you, though, may want to remove all traces of your 10 Things presence. We've set up this page to outline the various steps you can take to sweep up the various digital breadcrumbs you've created.

A word of warning: Deleting any of these accounts will also delete anything saved to the account (emails, saved photos, etc.). This is a permanent step, so make sure you've saved everything you want to keep elsewhere before you go through with ending an account.

Click the links below to jump to each set of instructions.
Google Account | Gmail | Blogger | MySpace | Facebook | LinkedIn | Eons | Flickr | del.icio.us

To Delete all Google Services (Blogger, Google Reader, Google Talk, etc.):

1. Think of this space as that stop along the tollway where you grab a snack, wander through the gift shop, buy a box of peanut brittle, and browse the massive rack of travel brochures for places like Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the Port Everglades Alligator Farm while you wait for your party to come out of the restroom.

The 10 Things Team will randomly post information about bugs we've discovered and are in the process of trying to fix, bugs YOU'VE discovered and reported to us for attention, tips for using some of the online tools we'll be exploring, where the Cubs are in the playoffs... you get the idea. It's basically a place for us to share those little discoveries we all stumble upon while working together on the 10 Things.

Have you heard? We're having a party! (29 Oct 2007-rs)

The Flickr Thing, revisited: A limited number of digital cameras are available for staff to use and play with on Thing 5. Please contact Jennifer, Rich, Ruth, or Toby to check out a camera. (18 Oct 2007-rs)

OOPS... I broke the blog! It appears that I inadvertently deleted links to staff blogs that begin with the letters R through Z. Sorry about that. I will replace them today. In fact, I'll start right now! (11 Oct 2007-rs)
WHEW! FIXED! If you don't see your blog listed, please notify the 10 Things Team.

The Flickr Thing: If you want to go back to see all of the Flickr photos that have been uploaded to the 10 Things account, but don't want to upload more of your own, you don't need to log in with the username and password. Simply go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/theskokieten and view to your heart's content. (9 Oct 2007-jpb)

HEARD IN THE HALL: "Everybody, everywhere you go, is typing like mad... just like the kids. Offline messages are delivered to us when we log in. If we don't know who the message is from, then we can't follow up and answer your question. If there's no title in the Title space, people who subscribe to your blog via RSS will see a blank space where the headline should be. So, when you next log into your blog, check to make sure each post has a title.

To see a little video of how to add a title to a post after the post has been published, take a If you answered, "the local 7-11," you're correct, but if you answered "the library," you'd also be right! Traditionally, people have thought of libraries strictly as physical buildings, but most libraries now have websites that essentially serve as virtual library branches offering a full array of services, collections, and information. And it's not just about the library website, but about the entire web presence created by the library.

According to an April 2006 report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 73% of American adults are internet users. And the share of Americans who have broadband connections at home has now reached 42%. As libraries continue to evolve and adapt to a rapidly changing world, they are making an effort to meet users where they are, and these days that means having a strong presence on the web.

DISCOVER
The Skokie Public Library's website is the main component of our virtual branch library and it's great! Besides the online catalog, which allows people to find materials and manage their library account from their own computer, the website offers a wealth of information and services for just about everyone. These include downloadable digital books, electronic research tools and reference services (check out the new IM reference service), recommendations and booklists for all age levels and all material formats, an events calendar, homework help and more!

Take some time to explore the website and discover what's available on it. Click on the various categories on the menus. Familiarize yourself with all that the website has to offer.

If you have time, take a look at this wiki with links to some of the best library websites out there. Take a look at the public library "hall of fame" in particular. Do you see any good ideas that we can add to our own library website?

Also, consider some of the other ways in which the library is making its presence felt on the web:

SkokieNet

SkokieTalk

SPL Flickr page

SPL Toolbar

DO

One of the best aspects of the library website is the downloadable digital book collection. Anyone with a Skokie Public Library card can download ebooks and eaudiobooks to their personal computer and even transfer books onto their own mp3 player for listening on-the-go! The challenge for this task will be to download a book to your computer and try it out either on your computer or an mp3 player. If you don't have an mp3 player, check with the Readers services desk to see if there is one available to play with. Step-by-step guides to the downloadable book collection can be found by clicking here.

Write a new blog post and share your thoughts on the library's website. What aspect of the website did you like the most? Do you have any ideas for new services we can provide through the virtual branch? What other ways can the library improve its web presence?

Thing 9: Google Tools - Online Productivity

DEFINE
The finish line is in sight. You're almost there. You should be proud of yourself!

This week's Thing involves an essential part of most people's online lives... yes, we're talking about the almighty Google. Chances are you (like everyone else on the planet) have used Google to search the web. Did you know that Google also offers an impressive array of web-based productivity tools that go way beyond simple searching?

One reason Google is able to come up with so many innovations is because Google engineers are asked to spend 20% of their work time (1 day per week) to work on pet projects that interest them. Google essentially requires their employees to "think outside the box" in order to continually come up with great new stuff. Imagine if every library did that!

One of these productivity tools is Google Docs, a tool for creating text documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Even if you swear by Microsoft Office, Google Docs provide some extra features that are definitely worth checking out. For more on that, we'll let the Common Craft people do what they do so well once again:

DISCOVER
Take a look at Google's products. Try stuff out and have fun! If you don't know where to start, focus on the tools listed under the "Communicate, show & share" category.

Also, take a look at Lifehacker, "a blog that covers tips and tricks for streamlining your life with computers (and sometimes without)." Updated several times daily, Lifehacker points out software downloads, web sites, do-it-yourself projects, how-to's, tutorials, shortcuts and tips for going beyond the default settings and getting things done in the most clever, unexpected and efficient ways. Think of Lifehacker as self-help for geeks." This is definitely one that you'll want to subscribe to!

DO

Let's take a closer look at Google Docs. Log in with your Google username and password and try creating a document. How does this compare to a software-based word processor, like Microsoft Word?

Write a blog entry about your thoughts on the Google tools you looked at. Is there one that really stood out to you as being useful?

BONUS CHALLENGE (optional)
Check out Google's amazing SMS product, which offers many of Google's search tools via cell phone text messaging. Try it with your cell phone if you have one. If not, try using the interactive demo right on that page.

Now try Thing 10: The Virtual Library Branch.

Thing 8: Wikis

DEFINE
Sure, “wiki” sounds funny and it’s fun to say, but it’s also a term for a powerful tool that is being used by a lot of people to collaboratively build a website and share information. In fact, more than one-third of American adult internet users (36%) consult the citizen-generated online encyclopedia Wikipedia, according to a new nationwide survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. If you’re part of this 36% who use Wikipedia, you’re already on your way to understanding wikis. In this task, you’ll learn more about what wikis are and how they work. You’ll also get a chance to participate by editing a wiki created just for the 10 Things.

For a quick, entertaining introduction to wikis, check out this video tutorial called Wikis in Plain English:

Click to Play

You can also read about how wikis work on one of these websites:

How Stuff Works: "How Wikis Work"

Wikipedia article: “Wiki”

DISCOVER
Hopefully, now that you know how wikis work, you’re also excited about the possibilities for using wikis in libraries. Take a look at how these libraries are using wikis to improve staff work or provide services to their patrons:

Ohio University Libraries Biz wiki

University of Minnesota Libraries Staff Website

To see more examples of libraries using wikis, check out the 10 Things "librarywikis" bookmark on del.icio.us.

DO

The best way to learn about wikis is to actually contribute to one. The 10 Things team has set up a 10 Things wiki just so you have a place to experiment and play. Go to the 10 Things wiki and have a look around. If you want to edit a page, click "Edit this page" at the top of any page. The password is... (please ask a 10 things team member for this password)" Take advantage of the help page to learn more about using this wiki. Remember, this wiki belongs to all of us, so don't be afraid to take ownership by making a contribution!

One of the main principles of web 2.0 is "radical trust" in people. Darlene Fichter, in her Blog on the Side, defines radical trust this way: "Radical trust is about trusting the community. We know that abuse can happen, but we trust (radically) that the community and participation will work. In the real world, we know that vandalism happens but we still put art and sculpture up in our parks. As an online community we come up with safeguards or mechanisms that help keep open contribution and participation working."

Write a blog entry sharing your thoughts on this idea of "radical trust" and wikis in general. What do you think of Wikipedia? Would you, or do you, trust and use it to find information? Can you think of ways wikis can be used by libraries to offer something to its patrons? Can you think of ways that a wiki can be helpful to you and your department?

BONUS CHALLENGE (optional)
If you’re up for it, try visiting Wikipedia and editing an article on a topic that you're familiar with. Here’s an article about how to edit a page in Wikipedia. NOTE: You'll need to create a Wikipedia user name and password to add or edit content.

You can also contribute to a library-related wiki. Here are two to check out:

LibrarianResources - ReadytoGo
This wiki was designed to share information about all kinds of library resources. It's a new wiki, so there isn't much content listed... but don't let that stop you from being one of the first to add something! Try posting a few links to a book list, pathfinder, or other original content on our website; details about an upcoming program at the Library; or your own tips for how you get things done at work. NOTE: You'll need to create a Wikispaces user name and password to add or edit content.

Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki
This wiki calls itself a "one-stop shop for great ideas and information" for libraries and the people who work in them. Try posting about one of our programs or services that other libraries might want to try for themselves. NOTE: Library Success also requires users to create a Library Success user name and password to add or edit content.

Now try Thing 9: Google Tools-- Online Productivity.

Thing 7: Podcasting

DEFINE

The word podcast refers to a non-musical audio broadcast that is distributed over the Internet. What differentiates a podcast from any other mp3 audio file on the Web is its method of distribution: our new friend RSS. To put it simply, mp3 + RSS = podcast. Podcasts can take many forms and can last anywhere from one minute to one hour (and beyond). Some parallels exist between podcasts and talk radio, but podcasts can cover any topic. From university lectures to weekly reality TV recaps, there are podcasts out there for any interest, no matter how obscure.

Despite the word podcast's derivation from Apple's iPod, you don't need an iPod to listen to podcasts. Since podcasts use the mp3 file format, a popular compressed format for audio files, you really just need a PC with headphones or speakers.

Subscribing to and downloading podcasts can be done in two ways. The first method, which is described in our DO exercise here, is to subscribe to a podcast in your feed reader, just as you would do with any other news site. When a new podcast is available, you can then choose to listen to it on your PC or download for transfer to an mp3 player.

The second, and more common, method is to use a podcatcher, an application that downloads your podcasts automatically for you. iTunes is the service most associated with finding and subscribing to podcasts, but if you don't have iTunes installed, there are plenty of other options. Penn State University has a succinct list of choices.

DISCOVER

Now that you're more familiar with how podcasts work, it's time to discover some that you want to hear!

Many libraries and institutions of higher education are now using this technology as a method of distributing promotional and educational content. The Library Success Wiki has an extensive list of public libraries, academic libraries, and affiliated organizations that are podcasting. Keep this list in mind for our DO exercise.

Engage in lifelong learning with Learn Out Loud educational podcasts. Browse the "Podcast Directory" on the left hand side. You can also see the most popular podcasts as you scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Podcast Alley is one fine example of a podcast directory.

Explore one of these podcast directories to find a podcast to suit your personal interests.

DO

Take a look at two or three of the podcast directories listed above and see if you can find a podcast that interests you. Aim for two library-related podcasts and one for your personal interest.

Sign into your Google Reader account. Add the RSS feed for your selected podcasts to your Reader by clicking "Add Subscription" and pasting in the URL of the podcast.

You should now have new items appearing in your Reader. To listen to your new podcasts, click the "Play" button within each new podcast.

Share your podcast experience with your co-workers. Create a blog post about your discoveries.

Which library podcasts did you listen to?

Do you see podcasting as a useful tool for Skokie Public Library?

Any ideas about which topics our patrons might be interested in hearing?

Do you have any other experience with listening to or creating podcasts?

BONUS CHALLENGE: None for this Thing. You've been working hard enough!

Move along to Thing 8: Wikis.

Thing 5: Flickr and Photo Sharing

A limited number of digital cameras are available for staff to use and play with on Thing 5 . Please contact Jennifer, Rich, Ruth, or Toby to check out a camera.

DEFINE

There are a number of spaces on the Internet that allow people to upload and share their favorite photos. While sites like Shutterfly, PhotoBucket, and Twango have attracted small audiences of their own, it's Flickr that has managed to really captured the online zeitgeist.

Flickr's secret weapon comes in the form of "tags," user-defined keywords that you can assign to every photo you upload to the site. Tags function much like subject headings in our Library's catalog. When used properly they can help us to organize our collection of photos, grouping like-photos together and provide us with quick and easy ways to find specific snapshots. But it's not just for your own photos. Tags help unlock all the social features of Flickr, where the really fun stuff is. We're going to look at the many features of Flickr, and hopefully we'll help you unleash your inner shutterbug.

For more information, we suggest these two articles:

The Newbie's Guide to Flickr. Pay particular attention to terms like Tags, Sets, and Collections. You may also want to refer back to this page as you take Flickr out for a spin.

16 Ways to use Flickr @ Your Library. Keep these ideas in the back of your head as you start to explore Flickr's different features.

DISCOVER

Visit Flickr

Explore Flickr

Take a tour of Flickr

DO
Please make sure you follow each step in this exercise.

Take a digital photo, or two, or 10. You can use your own digital camera, a cell phone, or one of the Library cameras that we'll have available for checkout.

Log into Flickr using the 10 Things account. The user name is "askskokie" and the password is [removed]. If you need help at this time, refer to the Flickr FAQ page or The Newbie's Guide for assistance.

Upload your photos by clicking "upload photos" and following the steps on the proceeding page. Flickr will do most of the work for you.

Add tags and a brief description to your photo by entering text in the corresponding fields. Try to use at least two tags, though you can enter as many as you'd like.

Once you've uploaded your photo, search around Flickr and see what other photos have the same tags.

Post your photo to your blog using Flickr's "Blog This" tool. If you're logged into Flickr, just click on the photo you want to use and you should see a "Blog This" link directly above that photo. You'll need to follow the steps to link the Flickr account to your blog. After you add the photo to your blog, you MUST complete step 7.

Once you've added a photo to your blog, be sure to remove your blog from the list of blogs stored on the 10 Things Flickr account.

Write a blog entry about your experience with this task. Make some suggestions on how the library could make use of its Flickr page? Suggest two or three tags that would be most useful for the Library's Flickr page.

BONUS CHALLENGE (optional)

Browse through some of these mashups and see what others have been able to do with Flickr. If you see something you like, make a note of it in your blog.

Now move on to Thing 6: Social Bookmarking.

Thing 6: Social Bookmarking

DEFINE
Bookmarks are an easy way to keep track of your favorite web pages on your computer. Many of you probably have a collection of bookmarks on your home or work computers. If is the case, then you've undoubtedly run into the problem of scale: the more bookmarks you have, the more unwieldy your collection becomes. What was supposed to make things more convenient is now a disorganized, overwhelming mess.

Del.icio.us addresses this problem by putting all your bookmarks online, and allowing you to create more useful groups of links by using tags. As you may remember from the Flickr Thing, tags are descriptive keywords that allow you to define your bookmarks (or photos) as you see fit. If you tag your bookmarks well, you can build a collection of hundreds of links, and still be able to find what you want.

But that's not the only great thing about del.icio.us. Befitting the social properties of Web 2.0, del.icio.us allows you to see other users' tags, making it easier to share information and get new ideas. By checking out other people's tags, you can find new sites that cater to your interests. As you find like-minded users, you can also create "networks" and pass links to one another. With its simple interface, del.icio.us makes it easy and fun to do all of these things.

Sound confusing? It is, at first. For a more concise explanation, take a look at this sweet video, from the geniuses at Common Craft:

DISCOVER
(If you need more assistance getting around del.icio.us, visit del.icio.us' help page.)

Visit del.icio.us (you can also go to delicious.com).

Look at the hotlist of popular bookmarks on the left half of the page. Take a look at some of the comments users have left by clicking on the blue "people" box. What do people find useful about the page? Do you see any patterns in the way people choose to bookmark a page?

Look at the list of "tags to watch" on the right side of the main del.icio.us page. Click the "more" link to see the tag cloud. In this visual representation of tags, the most popular items appear in a larger font than the others. Click on a few of these tags and see what pages come up.

DO

Choose a website that you find useful or interesting. This can be on any topic of interest to you. Make sure you remember its web address.

Log in to del.icio.us using the theskokieten login ("theskokieten") and password (spl+123). You will find several links that 10 Things Team found useful, as well as all of the articles that you've run into during the 10 Things program.

Add your selected website to our del.icio.us collection by clicking the "post" button and entering the website address. Add "staffpicks" as your main tag, followed by any other tags you think might be helpful.

Write a short blog post about your experience using del.icio.us. What tags do you think would be most useful for the Library? When you're done, bookmark your finished blog post in del.icio.us. Use the tag "testblog" and any other tags you think are appropriate.

BONUS CHALLENGE (optional)

Create your own del.icio.us account and start adding bookmarks of your own. If you find something you think we'd enjoy, send it to us by using a "for:theskokieten" tag.

Compare the manual method of adding links to del.icio.us with the browser buttons.

Now let's explore Thing 7: Podcasting.

Thing 4: Social Networking

DEFINE

Social Networking sites have become some of the most popular destinations on the Internet. They function as gathering places, promotional tools, and virtual hangouts for millions of users all over the world.

How do they work? There are two basic principles that account for their success:

They make it easy for users to create a customized page of their own where they can express their personality

Users can link their sites to their friends, allowing them to create a quantifiable manifestation of their social network.

The folks at Common Craft have created this explanation of Social Networking:

DISCOVER

Visit one or more of the following social networking websites. If you already belong to one or more social networking sites, try visiting one you're not familiar with.

MySpace: The most popular social networking site on the planet, frequented by millions of teens and twentysomethings, and used by bands as a marketing tool

Facebook: Originally designed for use on college campuses, skews to a slightly older audience, and features a cleaner, more customizable interface

LinkedIn: Designed for professionals to post resumes and build contacts.

Eons: Social networking and activity sharing geared toward ages 50+.

What features do you like or dislike about the site(s) you visited? What do you think makes them so popular?

DO

Choose one of the social networking sites listed above. Again, if you already belong to a social networking site, try a new one.

Visit the site and create a new profile. You don't have to use your real information if you're concerned about privacy.

Upload a photo to your profile (it doesn't have to be of yourself, or even of a person) and fill in some of the "about me" features. This is your chance to give your profile a little personality, so feel free to be as creative as you like.

Once you've created your profile, explore the site a little more. Search for somebody-- a friend, a co-worker, a former classmate, a famous author, or even one of the current presidential candidates. Add them to your friends list.

Create a blog post about your experience. What features do you like or dislike about the site(s) you visited? What do you think makes them so popular?

BONUS CHALLENGE (optional)
There are several social networking sites designed for book lovers. The two most notable sites are LibraryThing and GoodReads. Both of these sites allow members to create an online "bookshelf" where they can rate or review the titles they've read and share recommendations with their friends. Several libraries have even begun to integrate LibraryThing features into their online catalogs.

For extra credit, take a look around one of these sites. (You don't have to create an account to browse either site, but feel free to register if you'd like.) Search for one or two of your favorite books and see how other readers have rated, reviewed, or tagged the item. Do you think our Library could benefit by offering some of these features? Add your thoughts to your blog.

Now it's time to explore Thing 5: Flickr and Photo Sharing.

Thing 3: Instant Messaging

DEFINE
Instant Messaging, or IM, is a form of real-time communication where two or more people can carry out a private, instant conversation by typing messages back and forth. To use IM, a user either downloads IM software onto a computer or uses a web-based IM service.

The web-based IM service does not require any special downloads, only a web browser and internet access. Popular IM programs include AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, and Google Talk. The caveat with each of these major IM programs is that you and your friends must all be using the same program. For example, if you use AIM and wish to chat with your friends, they must also be on AIM. In the last few years, "multiprotocol instant messengers" such as Trillian and Meebo have made life easier for IM fans by allowing users to log in to multiple IM networks at one time. With Meebo, an AIM user can chat with a friend on the MSN network.

How do you find out if your friends or family are available for a chat? By adding them to your Buddy or Contact List. All IM programs allow you to save your buddies so that you can see when they’re available online. Once you get into the DO portion of this task, you’ll see what that means.

IM has been around for more than 10 years, but it’s only in the last five years or so that it’s gained massive popularity. We’ve all heard about how teens prefer IM to e-mail, but it’s not just the teens who are using IM. In a study published in September 2007, a whopping 84% of undergraduate students surveyed indicated that they IM on a daily basis. Going back to 2004, a Pew Internet study found that over 40% of adult internet users use IM to varying degrees. With statistics like that, you may have already used IM. If you haven’t, don’t fear! This task is designed to get you chatting in no time.

DISCOVER
Libraries all over the country have been using IM to provide one more way for patrons to get in touch and ask questions. This Library Journal article gives you a flavor of IM reference in public libraries.

Take a look at this list of Illinois libraries providing IM reference service. Select a few Illinois libraries and explore how each presents IM reference to its patrons.

IM can have a language of its own. Acronyms keep typing to a minimum but can be hard to decipher if you've never seen them before. This Acronym Dictionary from AOL will help you sort things out.

Are there IM acronyms for adults? Here’s a bit of humor from David Pogue’s blog at New York Times.

DO
Since you're already set up with a Google account, you're ready to go with Google's IM application, Google Talk. You'll use it to chat with other friends who are in the Google network.

As with any "real life" IM experience, you'll have to find out which of your friends you can connect with by asking their screenname and which service they use. Half the work has already done for you since you know all of your co-workers will be using a Google account.

Man/Woman can't IM alone, so you'll need to grab a partner for this one. For the sake of this exercise, it will be helpful if you and your partner are logged in to Google Talk at the same time.

Go to Google Talk. Click on "Launch Google Talk" and then sign in with your account.

Ask your partner for her/his screenname. In this case, it'll be the full Gmail address.

Add your partner to your Contacts list by entering their Gmail address into the "Search, add, or invite" box. You should see your new contact in the list and s/he should appear as "Available" if you are both logged in at the same time.

Start a chat session with your partner. Open a chat window by clicking on your partner's name from the Contacts list. You'll see an open whitespace with a field for typing at the bottom. Start typing and see what happens!

Besides chatting with text, you can also send links to websites, videos, and more. Feeling adventurous? Visit YouTube, the web's largest and best-known video site, and search for a video with a library theme. Share the video with your partner by copying the video's URL and pasting it into your chat box. It's like magic!

Now that you've had a chance to see IM for yourself, reflect a bit on your experience. Write a blog post about your time using Google Talk. Have you used any other IM programs before? Were you surprised by anything? How do you feel about IM as a mode of communication?

So where does Meebo fit in? You might not realize it, but you may have used it already! The 10 Things Team has been monitoring the Meebo account and you may have contacted us via the "chat with us" widget in the sidebar. If you haven't done so already, come say hello!

BONUS CHALLENGE (optional)

If you're already using an IM program besides Google Talk, why not set up a Meebo account so that you can monitor all of your Buddy Lists?

1. Go to Meebo to sign up for an account. You'll want to configure your accounts so that Meebo signs in to all of them at once. HINT: When logged in, look for the "Accounts" link on the left.
2. Share your experience using Meebo by blogging about it. Is Meebo something that you might find useful?

Moving right along to Thing 4: Social Networking:

Thing 1: Blogs

DEFINE
Chances are you’ve heard the term “blog” being used endlessly, but maybe you’re not quite sure what blogs are and how they work. The point of this Thing is to help you become familiar with blogs and even start a blog yourself. In fact, we’re asking all 10 Things participants to set up a blog to share your thoughts about the various Things we’ll be learning. The blogs will be set up using Blogger, the same easy-to-use blogging platform that the 10 Things Team used to create the website you're looking at now. Your blog will also be a way to record your progress and will allow the 10 Things Team to verify completion of each task so you can claim your gift card (if you're one of the first 100 people to complete the 10 Things) and be eligible for the prize raffle that will be drawn on Staff Day. So, dust off those keyboards and get ready to become a blogger!

Before you create your own blog, you’ll need to know more about blogging basics. One easy way to do this is to navigate through Blogger’s Quick Tour.

For those who want more info about blogs, check out this Wikipedia article.

DISCOVER
Now that you know more about blogs, you might be wondering, “How is blogging relevant to libraries?” Good question! We’re glad you asked!

Blogs are an increasingly popular means of sharing information and opinions. Many libraries use them to share information about library programs and services with their customers, and many people read blogs as an important source of news and information. Yet, it's not just about sharing information and thoughts. Blogging is also about inviting people to participate in the conversation by leaving comments.

Plus, library staff members all over the world are getting in on the action by creating blogs that focus on libraries.

Click here to read more about how librarians and libraries are putting blogs to use. Then check out these excellent library blogs:

St. Joseph County Public Library

Darien Library

More examples of library blogs can be found at del.icio.us and on the Internet Public Library's IPL Blog List.

DO
Now that you’re all caught up on what blogs are and how they work, it’s time to actually create your very own personal blog. If you’d like to see a video of someone creating a blog before doing it yourself, click here and press “play” to watch the "Get a Blog" video introduction to Blogger. If you’re feeling courageous and want to just go for it, follow these simple steps and you’ll be blogging in no time!

Go to Blogger and log in with your Google user name and password in the top right corner, beneath the heading "Sign in to use Blogger with your Google Account."

Name your blog. Your blog name will appear in your blog’s unique Internet address like this: http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/ (where "yourblogname" is the unique blog identifier you selected when you set up your account). Remember to write down your blog address!
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: How you identify yourself on your blog is your choice. You can blog under your real name, or you can create an anonymous screen name. However, in order to qualify for the 10 Things prizes, you will need to register both your blog name and your real name with the 10 Things Team.

Select your template. This allows you to pick a color scheme and design for your blog.If you run into trouble, visit Blogger's Help Page.

Create your first blog post.Add a new post to your blog describing your experience with Thing 1: Blogs. Was it easy or difficult? What did you think of the library blogs you looked at? How can Skokie Public Library make use of blogs? Do you have any other thoughts on blogs in general?

Keep an eye out for the list of 10 Things participant blogs on the 10 Things @ SPL website. Read at least one blog and leave a comment.

Finally, register your blog with the 10 Things Team by sending an email to skokielibrary@gmail.com. Be sure to include your name and your blog’s Web address. If you are blogging anonymously, be sure to include your "nom de blog."

BONUS CHALLENGES (optional)

Create an online poll for your blog. Click here for instructions on how to do this.

Visit Technorati and search for popular blogs or a blog on a topic that interests you. Add a few blogs to your blog's link list. Click here for instructions on how to add a link list and other page elements to your blog.

Now get ready for Thing 2: RSS and Feed Readers.

Thing 2: RSS and Feed Readers

DEFINE

Maybe you've heard the term RSS from co-workers or friends. You’ve probably even noticed this or this on websites ranging from mainstream media sites to personal blogs. If the hows and whys of RSS are still a mystery to you, you're not alone. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and is a file format for delivering frequently updated information, such as news headlines, blog posts, and podcasts over the web. It helps to think of it as Really Simple Subscription, because you are essentially subscribing to a website and having information delivered to you when it is published.

Think about the websites you visit everyday. Imagine visiting 5 websites a day. When there is no new information, you've wasted time going to 5 different sites. Now imagine being able to go to only one spot to see updated information. That one spot is called a feed reader, or aggregator. The feed reader manages the RSS feeds of all of the websites to which you subscribe. Sounds good, right?

For another explanation of how RSS works, check out RSS in Plain English, from the fine folks over at Common Craft:

<img alt="Video thumbnail. Fresh! Delivered to You!: a longer article about RSS with a library research twist

DISCOVER

Take a look at these three libraries that are using RSS feeds to get information to their patrons:

Hennepin County Public Library

Denver Public Library

NEW RSS Feeds @ Skokie Public Library

DO

We've got one more thing for you to watch. This tutorial on Google Reader provides a good overview of how our feed reader of choice (at least for this task) works. One word of caution: the tutorial was created in 2005, back when Google Reader was just a baby. It's grown a bit since then, so expect to see a few cosmetic changes.

Go to http://reader.google.com/ and sign in with your Google account.

It's time to start adding subscriptions! Click "Add Subscription" and enter the URL of a site that offers an RSS feed. Add at least 5 subscriptions to your Reader.

If you are using Internet Explorer 7.0 or Firefox, you can subscribe to an RSS feed in Google Reader with a single click. If a Website has an RSS feed, you will see this indicator in your browser's address bar. If you click on that indicator, it will take you to a page where you can choose your aggregator. Choose Google Reader as the aggregator to use. Then you will be taken to the Google Reader page for subscribing to that feed. Hurrah!

No idea what to subscribe to? Here are some suggestions:

10 Things @ SPL participants' blogs. Keep up with your co-workers as they work their way through the 10 Things. Visit a blog, copy the URL, and paste it into the "Add Subscription" field in Google Reader.

Skokie Public Library's new DVDs

SkokieTalk

Chicago Tribune

Your favorite news, career, hobby, or family websites

Once you've got at least 5 subscriptions in your Reader, check back periodically to see if there are any new items. Click around in Google Reader and explore a bit of its functionality.

Now that you've got your Reader set up, take a few minutes to post to your blog about your RSS experience so far. Don’t know what to blog about? Think about these questions:

What do you like about RSS and feed readers?

How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your work or personal life?

How can libraries use RSS or take advantage of this new technology?

If you're already using a feed reader, share your experiences with your co-workers. Which one do you use? Do you find it useful?

BONUS CHALLENGE (optional)
Customize your Blogger template to include a feed from one of your favorite sites. HINT: Look for "Add an Element" in your Template.

Now you're ready for Thing 3: Instant Messaging.

Help!

Has something fun turned into something frustrating?

Do you feel like you'll never finish the 10 Things?

Since this program is self-directed and is being completed by many staff members throughout the library simultaneously, you are encouraged to work together along your journey. Bravo!

To make the most of your 10 Things experience, you'll want to keep a few thoughts in mind:

There are no stupid questions. Really.

Your colleagues are your best line of defense. If you get stuck on any of the 10 Things, there are people all around you who can help.

You don't have to like all of the tools presented here. Maybe you'll come across a few that you would never want to use in your personal life. That's okay, you won't hurt our feelings! But try to think about how our patrons might use them, or how they might be used to provide improved library services, or even how they might help you do your work.

Play. Experiment. Have fun.

Now, to get started, you'll need to:

Set up a Gmail account.
You will need an email address to sign into many of the tools we'll be using throughout the 10 Things. Please do not use your work email address. Instead, sign up for a free account with Gmail, Google's free email account. The benefit of using Gmail is that it will allow easy access to Google Talk, Blogger, Google Reader, and Google Docs-- all Google-created services we'll be using.

Go to www.gmail.com.

On the right-hand side, click on the "Sign up for Gmail" link. Fill out the required information and accept Google's Terms of Service.

Once your account is set up, make note of your email address and password.

Keep track of your usernames and passwords.
Download this handy sheet to keep track.

Notify the 10 Things Team that you're ready to go!
Email the 10 Things Team: skokielibrary [at] gmail [dot] com. They'll send you on your way to Thing 1.

Locate a pair of headphones.
Many of the Things have audio and video. If you're working in close quarters, you'll want to have headphones. You may bring in your own or acquire them from the 10 Things Team.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How does this online learning program work?

This is a self-discovery program which encourages Skokie Public Library staff to take control of their own learning through exploration and play. Library staff are encouraged to work together and share with each other their discoveries, techniques and how-to's both in person and through their blogs. We've tried to make things easy by giving you all of the information you might need upfront, so there are no time-consuming manuals to read.

2. Is this program open to all Library staff or just some?

This program is open to all full and part-time Skokie Public Library staff. Public desk staff will be required to participate. All other staff are encouraged to participate as a continuing education activity. Your supervisor or Department Head will help you determine your level of participation.

3. How long do I have to complete the program?

The program starts October 1 and ends November 30, 2007. You have 10 weeks to complete this 8 week program. Yes, you get an extra two weeks to work at your own pace. We estimate a Thing and a half per week, but of course you may work ahead. And of course, you can catch up if you fall behind. (In other words, you can personalize this learning to suit your needs).

4. How long will each task take?

Everyone works at a different pace. We estimate one hour per Thing to complete the 10 Things program. Some people may take just a few minutes to do a Thing, while someone else may take a full hour. If you're getting close to your hour and still not done with your Thing, check in with a 10 Things Team member. We want to keep frustration levels low.

5. Will I get paid for doing the 10 Things?

Yes. If you are a full-time employee, you will have time during your regularly scheduled hours to complete the 10 Things. If you are part-time, you are eligible to receive one hour per Thing (for a total of 10 hours) outside your regularly scheduled shift. You and your supervisor are responsible for finding time to work on the 10 Things.

6. Will there be any training classes offered to show staff how to do this?

No, this is a self-directed learning program. If you have questions about the program, the 10 Things Team will make themselves available in person, on IM, email, and through comments on the 10 Things blog. You are also encouraged to be resourceful and to find a colleague who can help. We will list the blogs of everyone who is participating so that we can all share and help each other. You can visit the blogs of your colleagues to see what they've done and leave a comment. Be sure to share your knowledge and expertise too! If you have a good tip to share, you can post it as a comment on any of the 10 Tasks. For more information, visit the help page.

7. How do I track my progress for each of the 10 Things?

Each participant in this program will be required to keep a blog to track his or her progress. We will track your progress by visiting your blog.

8. I would like to participate but don't feel comfortable with my co-workers reading my blog, can I participate anonymously?

Since you control all the information that you share on your blog, you can choose to use a screen name to identify yourself to keep yourself anonymous. However, in order to qualify for any incentives, you will need to identify yourself by informing Jennifer, Ruth, Toby, or Richard of your blog's existence. We will not share your identity with anyone on this blog site.

9. Are there prizes involved?

The first 100 people to finish by November 30 will receive a $10 Best Buy gift card and be entered into the raffle drawing for fabulous prizes to be awarded on Staff Day 2007. All finishers will be entered into the raffle drawing, regardless of when they finish. Staff who do not participate at any level will not receive any of the 10 Things program prizes.

10. What if this program is too easy/too much of a challenge for me?

If you are already completely comfortable using this program's web 2.0 tools, you use them regularly, and you do not wish to go through the 10 Things program, you may offer your services as a Buddy. If you sign up to be a Buddy, you will be paired up with another staff person who has requested ongoing assistance. This will count as your participation in the program.

If you aren't yet ready to delve into the 10 Things program, you have the option of signing up for a series of One-on-One Computer Instruction sessions, enrolling in our Adult Computer Classes, or doing some other type of online learning that is better suited to your current skill level. Your supervisor can help determine which classes you should take.

Whether you think you fit in either of those categories, you may want to start the 10 Things program regardless. You may learn something new or discover skills you never knew you had!

11. What if I don't have easy access to a computer?

In addition to the staff training room computer, laptop loans are available from the LAN department. Morning drop-in hours are also scheduled in the Youth Services computer lab throughout October and November. The Adult Services computer lab is also available during regular library hours.

12. Where can I go for help?

If you have questions about the program, the 10 Things Team will make themselves available in person, on IM, email, and through comments on the 10 Things blog. You are also encouraged to be resourceful and to find a colleague who can help. We will list the blogs of everyone who is participating so that we can all share and help each other. Drop-in hours are also scheduled in the Youth Services computer lab.
