Welcome to 10 Things @ SPL!

We're glad you're here! This blog is the home of Skokie Public Library's staff training program, 10 Things @ SPL. The 10 Things are new and emerging technologies that are shaping the way people access information, communicate, learn and create. Starting October 1 and running through November 30, you'll have time to explore new tools and get hands-on experience using them.

Without further ado, the Things are:

  1. Blogging
  2. RSS and Feed Readers
  3. Instant Messaging
  4. Social Networking
  5. Flickr and Photo Sharing
  6. Social Bookmarking
  7. Podcasting
  8. Wikis
  9. Google Tools - Online Productivity
  10. The Virtual Library Branch
Each Thing is structured around three main themes: Define, Discover, and Do. We'll provide a short definition, give you some resources to explore the tools or technologies further, and ask you to complete an assigned task. Bonus challenges are available if you finish the task early or want to learn more.

Before launching straight into 10 Things @ SPL, follow the links in the upper right corner and read the FAQs and Getting Started. If these resources do not answer your questions, leave a comment on this blog post and the 10 Things Team will respond as quickly as possible.

If you've finished with the 10 Things, you may also start "recloaking" your online identity. This page on cleaning up will outline the steps for removing your various 10 Things accounts.

By participating and completing the 10 Things @ SPL, you will not only be learning new things, but you will also be actively working to fulfill the Mission of Skokie Public Library:
Skokie Public Library promotes lifelong learning, discovery and enrichment through a broad spectrum of materials, technologies, and experiences. Serving a diverse population, the Library facilitates access to information, the exchange of ideas, and the building of community.

And now... let's get started on the 10 Things!
